Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 9/25/08 - With only days remaining until training camp, the Amarillo Gorillas are beginning to solidify their roster for 2008-09.
Adding a 6'3", 230-pound second-round NHL draft pick is a pretty good way to solidify a roster.
Drafted 48th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1995, Shane Kenny has signed with Amarillo for the approaching season. A standout player with Owen Sound and Sarnia during his junior career, Kenny has played for teams in the American Hockey League, the 'old' IHL, the UHL, the ECHL, and Europe.
The Oromocto, New Brunswick native has been retired from hockey since the 2005-06 season, when he played for the Laval Chiefs of the LNAH in Quebec.
"Shane is a guy that's looking to get back into the game after taking a few years off," said Gorillas Head Coach Tom Coolen. "He wants to come back to Amarillo and try to re-establish his career."
Kenny scored 32 points in 45 games during his final junior season with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL in 1997-98. After turning pro, he played a season with Rochester (AHL), and split a season between three IHL clubs in 1999-00. As a professional, Kenny's best season came with the Arkansas RiverBlades of the ECHL in 2000-01, scoring 28 points and collecting 116 penalty minutes over the course of 63 games.
"He's got a great combination of size, strength, and skill, as well as experience," Coolen continued. "The last time he played in the United States, he went to the UHL finals with Fort Wayne...he's a solid player and has the potential to be excellent for Amarillo."
The defenseman spent time playing in Amsterdam during the first part of the decade before coming back to North America and playing with Laval. His stint with Fort Wayne came in 2004-05, during which he scored 11 points in 39 regular season games.
