Simoes Invited To Lake Erie Camp
September 25, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) - The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have announced that defenseman David Simoes has been invited to take part in the training camp of the American Hockey League's (AHL) Lake Erie Monsters. The Cleveland, Ohio-based franchise is the league's affiliate of the National Hockey League's Colorado Avalanche.
The 23-year old native of Vanderhoof, British Columbia played last year in the CHL with the New Mexico Scorpions, and with the Youngstown SteelHounds, who acquired him at the trade deadline in February to complete a deal between the teams initiated in November of last year. The 5-foot-10, 205 pound blue liner totaled 45 games with New Mexico and 18 with Youngstown. He also played in five SteelHounds' playoff games.
Simoes scored a goal and added five assists for the Scorpions, and then added an assist for the SteelHounds in the stretch run of the campaign. He did not score any points in the playoffs and picked up 19 penalty minutes. Simoes was signed by the RiverKings during the off-season by Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski, who coached Simoes at Youngstown.
Kaminski says this will be a great opportunity for Simoes to gauge himself at the next level of hockey. "They're looking for some toughness and grit, which is exactly what he will bring to the table along with energy and a relentless work ethic," Kaminski said. "He is a great "team guy" and will do anything for his teammates. We wish him all the best!"
Simoes is looking forward to that challenge and says it's the biggest chance he's had in his hockey career, so far. 'I feel very fortunate to be getting this opportunity to try out at such a high caliber. I'm not going to let this opportunity go to waste here, I've really got to take advantage of it."
Simoes will start his AHL training camp experience Thursday, September 25th with general skating workouts with the other camp attendees at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Competitive workouts will start September 29th and continue that entire week. If things work out for him, Simoes will be able to dress for two exhibition games with the Monsters Friday, October 3rd and Saturday, October 4th.
The RiverKings start their quest for the Ray Miron President's Cup on Friday, October 17th in a 7:05 PM game against the Wichita Thunder at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. For ticket information, call the RiverKings' offices at 662-342-1755 today!
