Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX 6/16/08 - The Central Hockey League's summer conference concluded Saturday, as teams determined divisional alignment, held the Rapid City expansion draft, and announced 2007-08 league award winners.

Gorillas owner Randy Sanders was announced as a nominee for two honors at the CHL's award banquet Saturday evening. He was one of four finalists for the Leadership Award, given to the owner who displays the finest leadership qualities over the course of the season. Sanders was also a candidate for the first-year Ralph Backstrom Soul of Service Award, which is bestowed upon the individual who has most embodied the spirit of the league through their service to their club and their community.

On Friday, the divisional alignment for the league in 2008-09 was officially released by the league owners and governors. The Gorillas will once again be playing in the Southwest Division, alongside the Odessa Jackalopes, the New Mexico Scorpions, and the defending President's Cup Champion Arizona Sundogs. The Texas Brahmas will move down to the Southern Conference, playing in the Southeast Division along with the Laredo Bucks, the Corpus Christi Rayz, and Rio Grande Valley.

In other news from the conference, no Gorillas were chosen in the Rapid City expansion draft. Garrett Prosofsky of Oklahoma City was the first of five players chosen for the expansion Rush. The playoff format for this upcoming Central Hockey League season will remain the same as in 2007-08, with ten teams earning a berth into the battle for the President's Cup.

Finally, the league announced plans for two additional teams to enter the fold in 2009-10. The expansion franchises will be located in Independence, MO and Allen, TX, with each playing in newly-constructed venues.
