Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - The Odessa Jackalopes announced today the signing of Western Michigan University graduates Mike Lesperance and Jeff Pierce for the upcoming 2008-2009 Central Hockey League season.
Mike Lesperance (Les-per-AHNCE) appeared in 19 games last year for the Western Michigan University Broncos, scoring five goals and four assists during his senior season. The 6-1, 195-pound forward played all four years at WMU, scoring 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) in 115 collegiate games. Prior to attending WMU, Lesperance played junior hockey in his hometown of Newmarket, Ontario, for two years with the Newmarket Hurricanes.
"He's a big, strong winger and that's what we're trying to add to this team for next season," said Jacks head coach Paul Gillis.
"I'm excited to be playing pro hockey, and I'm hopeful that good things will happen in Odessa," said Lesperance, "Texas is far from my hometown, but I'm looking forward to getting started."
Jeff Pierce scored 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) for the Bronco hockey team last season in 37 games. The Troy, Michigan, native was also a four-year player while attending WMU. The 6-0, 185-pound forward played his junior hockey for the Petrolia Canflow Jets before attending WMU.
"He's a natural goal-scorer, and I'm expecting good things from both of these guys," added Gillis.
Lesperance and Pierce will join Jackalopes assistant coach, Matt Cressman, as Western Michigan University alumni on this year's team.
"It's exciting for me to see a couple guys from my alma mater make the jump to pro hockey with us," said Cressman, "It'll be a tough transition for them in terms of the work ethic it takes for success, and also playing 64 games a season as opposed to just 30 in college, but (Gillis) is pretty good about keeping our guys fresh."
The Odessa Jackalopes will begin their 12th season in October 2008. Season tickets, mini-plans, and single game tickets are available by calling (432) 552-PUCK or visiting jackalopes.org.
