Brahmas Move To Southeast Division In 2008-09
June 16, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (June 16)- The Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) will pack up their divisional bags and head south for the 2008-09 season. The move will put them in the Southeast division with the Corpus Christi Rayz, Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
With a new franchise, Rapid City Rush, joining the league for the season and departure of Austin and Youngstown, the Brahmas were realigned, making them the new face of the South.
"We are excited about this move as our fans will have a chance to develop some new rivals," said Brahmas General Manager Mike Barack. "Also, we have been assured by the CHL that we will continue to play our closest geographic rivals more often, such as Bossier-Shreveport, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Odessa".
Although the division and conference alignment has changed, the competitive play will still be the same according to Head Coach Dan Wildfong.
"This will be an incredible test for us as there are some caliber hockey teams in the South. The matchups should be interesting considering we have been in the North for so long, but I look forward to the challenge for the organization and our fans," said Wildfong.
Despite the divisional changes, the playoff format for the CHL will remain the same as a total of ten of the 16 teams will qualify for the post-season, five teams from each conference. Each of the four division regular season champions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast) will be seeded 1st or 2nd in their conference, based on point total. The next three teams will be based on their conference regular season point totals, regardless of their division.
The playoffs have four rounds:
1) Conference Quarterfinals-best of 3- (4th seed vs 5th seed)
2) Conference Semifinals-best of 7- (1st seed vs 1st round series winner, 2nd seed vs 3rd seed)
3) Conference Finals-best of 7
4) President's Cup Finals-best of 7
Another development from the league meetings was the expansion draft for Rapid City. All teams were required to place four players from their roster, ultimately making 60 players available for the Rush. The Brahmas did not lose any players in the draft.
