Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Edinburg - Eric Gonzalez homered in his return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium, but the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings fell to the Edinburg Roadrunners 9-4 Sunday.
Gonzalez's home run was a two-run shot and his first of the season, bringing the WhiteWings within 9-4 in the top of the eighth against Robbie Nelson. Gonzalez played for Edinburg from 2001-through-2009.
The WhiteWings (2-3) struck right away against Wardell Starling (1-0). Javis Diaz led off the game with a single, moved to second on a wild pick off throw, to third on a Kevin Griffin fly ball and home on a Salvador Paniagua sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The Roadrunners (4-1) responded with an unearned run of their own against Greg Conrad (0-1) in the bottom of the inning. Wilmer Pino led off with an infield-single, moved to second on an infield-single by Felix Molina. After Carlos Hereaud grounded into a double play, moving Pino to third, Ambiorix Concepcion reached on an error to score Pino.
In the bottom of the second, Alexis Hernandez, Osiel Flores and Pino hit consecutive one-out singles to set-up a Molina sacrifce fly that also moved Flores to third. Pino stole second, and when the throw went into centerfield, Flores scored to make it 3-1 Roadrunners.
Paniagua hit his first home run in the fourth to bring the WhiteWings within 3-2.
Flores responded with his first home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2.
Hereaud and Concepcion led off the bottom of the fifth with walks against Miguel Matos. Vincent Blue followed with a two-run double. Melvin Perez hit a grounder to third. The throw was in time, but the throw back to third got away, allowing Blue to score to make it 7-2.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh and Adam Matos walked to force in a run. Two outs later, Molina hit an RBI-single to make it 9-2.
The WhiteWings try to avoid the sweep against the Roadrunners on Tuesday at 10:05 a.m. Right-hander David Cross (1-0) is expected to face right-hander Tim Haines (0-0).
