
Starling, Roadrunners Defeat 'Wings

EDINBURG, Texas--- The Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 9-4 Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium behind a strong outing from starter Wardell Starling.
Starling (1-0) picked up the win after pitching six and two-thirds innings and allowing one run and striking out four.
Javis Diaz got the game started with a single to right field and then moved to second on a throwing error. After moving to third on a fly ball to center field, Diaz came into score on a sacrifice fly by Salvador Paniagua giving the WhiteWings (2-3) a 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners (4-1) tied things at one after a throwing error by Brad Menadier which allowed Wilmer Pino to score from third.
Three straight singles in the bottom of the third inning drove in Alexis Hernandez from second giving the Roadrunners the lead. With runners on the corners, Felix Molina hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Osiel Flores to score giving Edinburg the 3-1 lead.
RGV's Paniagua hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth cutting the Roadrunner's lead to 3-2.
Flores got the run back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run of his own off of RGV's starter Greg Conrad (0-1) making the score 4-2.
Vincent Blue hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifht that drove in Carlos Hereaud and Ambiorix Concepcion. After a ground out, a throwing error by RGV's Joel Roa allowed Blue to score extending the Roadrunner's lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, an RBI bases loaded walk to Adam Matos drove in Blue from third. Molina then followed with an RBI single pushing the scoring to 9-2 Edinburg.
Eric Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning making it a 9-4 game.
Ricardo Serrano pitched a scoreless ninth closing the game for Edinburg with a final score of 9-4.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the final game of the series Tuesday morning at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Tim Haines (1-0) is expected to face David Cross (1-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 10:05 a.m.
