
Big Fourth Lifts Roadrunners

HARLINGEN, Texas--- A four run fourth inning helped the Edinburg Roadrunners defeat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 11-4 Sunday night at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (2-2) got on the score board against Edinburg starter Mike Reeves in the bottom of the first inning with RBI singles from Salvador Paniagua and Eric Gonzalez giving RGV a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning an RBI single by Jeff Toth drove in Paniagua extending the WhiteWings lead to 3-0.
Carlos Hereaud started the fourth inning for the Roadrunners with a walk and then moved to second on an Ambiorix Concepcion single. After a ground ball by Vincent Blue, a throwing error by RGV's second baseman allowed Hereaud to score. Robert Matlock then hit an RBI ground out driving in Concepcion from third making it 3-2 WhiteWings.
Edinburg (3-1) tied the game at three in the top fifth after Wilmer Pino reached on an error and then later scored on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Hereaud hit a triple to right field and then scored on an RBI single by Blue which gave the Roadrunners a 4-3 lead.
Alexis Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth that knocked RGV starter Stephen Whalen (0-1) out of the game. With two outs in the inning, Hereaud hit the second two-run home run of the inning extending Edinburg's lead to 8-3.
RGV added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded double play that allowed Jose Fulgencio to score making it 8-4 Edinburg.
Three RBI singles in the top of the ninth by Blue, Melvin Perez and Adam Matos made the score 11-4 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Aaron Guerra (1-0), Ray Silva, Robbie Nelson, and Julio Castro combined for five and two-thirds innings of relief and allowed just one run on six hits.
The Roadrunners will play their home-opener against the WhiteWings Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Wardell Starling (0-0) is expected to face Greg Conrad (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Roadrunners are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that include Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley and San Angelo.
