DAYTON, Ohio - Stephen Gonsalves (1-0) picked up a win in his Midwest League debut on Sunday afternoon as the Kernels downed Dayton 4-1 at Fifth Third Field. Gonsalves allowed only three hits in six scoreless innings, striking out six and walking one.

The Kernels (20-15, 51-54) only had one hit through five scoreless innings, but they put up two runs on two swings in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. J.D. Williams homered to left field, beginning the sixth inning. It was his second of the season. Later in the inning, Logan Wade also homered to left. It was Wade's fourth of the season and second in his last four games.

The two runs were enough for Gonsalves to win as he scattered the three singles - allowing the singles in the second, third, and fifth inning. The lone walk did not come until the sixth inning. He added a pickoff in the fifth inning, retiring a runner who reached via a single.

Dayton's starter Amir Garrett (4-6) struck out 10 Kernels but took the loss. Garrett went 6 1/3 innings, allowing the two home runs and three total hits. He sent the first nine of the game down in order, striking out six of those batters.

The Kernels added two more runs in the seventh inning, extending their lead to 4-0. Against reliever Pedro Diaz, Brian Haar tripled down the right field line. With two outs, a missed catch by first baseman Robert Ramirez allowed Haar to score and Jason Kanzler to reach first base. Williams then followed by lining a RBI double into the left-center gap for his second run-scoring hit of the day. It scored Kanzler and gave the Kernels a four-run lead.

Dayton (15-20, 51-52) scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning, making the score 4-1. Joe Hudson doubled with one out and later scored on Avain Rachal's RBI single.

Brandon Bixler went two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one. Dallas Gallant threw a perfect inning, striking out two for his third save.

Pedro Diaz went 1 2/3 innings for the Dragons, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. He struck out two and walked none. Zack Weiss added one scoreless and hitless inning.

The Kernels finish up the road trip against the Dragons on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. CT (7:00 p.m. ET). RHP Aaron Slegers (7-6, 4.49) gets the start for the Kernels while RHP Sal Romano (6-9, 3.79) is scheduled to start for Dayton.
