BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Lansing Lugnuts (17-18, 49-54) outlasted the Burlington Bees (19-16, 57-47) for a 3-2, fifteen-inning win on Sunday afternoon at Community Field.
Lansing shortstop Dawel Lugo broke the tie in the top of the fifteenth inning off of Alex Blackford (Loss, 0-3) to give the Lugnuts a 3-2 lead.
Reliever Francisco Gracesqui (Win, 1-0) entered in the twelfth inning to work four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
After the two teams played fourteen innings on Saturday night, the Bees rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extras. Erick Salcedo reached on an error by Lugo to open the bottom of the ninth, and pinch hitter Mike Fish hit a two-out, game-tying single to center field to even the score at 2-2.
The Lugnuts took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when catcher Daniel Klein scored on a wild pitch by reliever Ronnie Muck.
Left fielder Chaz Frank tied the game in the fifth, rushing home to score on a passed ball charged to catcher Stephen McGee.
The Bees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by McGee to score Angel Rosa from third.
Making his first start as a member of the Lugnuts, Starlyn Suriel worked five innings, allowing one run four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Iowa native Matt Dermody pitched four relief innings for Lansing, giving up one unearned run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Roberto Espinosa pitched around a pair of walks and a hit in his two innings.
Burlington starter Harrison Cooney did not earn a decision, pitching five innings with one unearned run on four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
The Lugs struck out a season-high 19 times in the game.
The Lugnuts and Bees play the rubber match of the three-game set on Monday night at Community Field. Former Bee Brent Powers (2-3, 5.50) starts on the mound for Lansing, and right-hander Yency Almonte (2-2, 3.29) will pitch for Burlington.
