Missoula PaddleHeads News Release
MISSOULA, MONT - While with the Missoula Osprey in 2009, Paul Goldschmidt wore jersey number 36. In the history of the Missoula Osprey, it's amazing how prophetic that jersey number nearly became. Goldschmidt has been promoted from Double-A Mobile to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and will become the 35th former Osprey player to make a Major League Baseball roster.
Goldschmidt will join the D-backs in San Francisco, just in time for the start of a crucial three-game series with the Giants. The D-backs currently trail the Giants by two games in the National League West.
Goldschmidt has put together a banner minor-league career, including an incredible run through the Southern League in 2011. Just in the past two months, Goldschmidt has been selected to the 2011 XM All-Star Futures Game, as well as earning a starting spot in the Southern League All-Star Game, while, through Sunday's games, leading all of the minors in home runs and RBIs.
"Goldy" put himself in position for a promotion to the D-backs, thanks to his incredible run in the pitching-favored Southern League. He is eighth in the league in hitting, toting a .306 batting average, and leads the league in several categories - home runs (30), RBIs (94), on-base percentage (.435), slugging percentage (.626), OPS (1.061), walks (82), total bases (229) and runs (84), and also has the best home run-to-at-bat ratio in the league, hitting a four-bagger every 12.2 at-bats.
Goldschmidt has been providing big power numbers since beginning his professional baseball career. In Missoula, Goldschmidt hit 18 home runs, setting a new single-season standard in the process, while also breaking the record for doubles (27), slugging percentage (.638) and total bases (183). Goldy then followed that up with an MVP season in the California League for Class A Advanced Visalia, leading all of Class A Baseball with 35 home runs while hitting .314 and driving in 108 runs for the Rawhide.
Tickets for all Osprey home games are now on sale at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 N. Higgins, by phone at (406) 543-3300 or online at www.MissoulaOsprey.com.
