Goldeyes Win Series Finale
August 9, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes took the final game of a three-game set from the Schaumburg Flyers this afternoon, winning 7-2 before a crowd of 6,086 at Canwest Park.
Winnipeg opened the scoring off Alain Quijano in the first when Cory Patton drew a lead-off walk and came all the way around to score on a Juan Diaz single. Schaumburg came right back. With Jeff Dunbar and Felix Jose aboard on singles, Lyndon Poole sacrificed both runners up before a Richard Mercado ground out scored Dunbar. The hosts regained the lead in the third.
Patton walked to lead it off, moved up on a Josh Asanovich ground out and scored on a two-out single by Kevin West. It became 3-1 in the fourth. Kurt Crowell and Adam Frost hit one-out singles before Dustin Richardson reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. After Patton struck out for the second out, Asanovich hit a ball that Tony Mansolino booted at third, scoring Crowell.
West made it 4-1 when he homered to start the fifth and Patton did the same off Kris Jiggits to start the sixth. Winnipeg added to its lead in the eighth. West singled to start the inning and reached second on an error by Poole. Dee Brown walked for the third time and that was it for Jiggits. Jon Huizinga came in and, after getting Cody Ehlers to line out, was facing pinch-hitter Brent Metheny when West and Brown performed a double steal. Metheny was intentionally walked to load the bases for Adam Frost, who walked to score West.
Schaumburg got one back in the eighth off Jordan Stewart when Antoan Richardson singled, stole second and scored on a Victor Ferrante double. But the Goldeyes responded when Patton walked for the third time and scored on an Asanovich double.
Pulsipher (2-0) picked up the win, allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings, walking one and fanning five. Quijano (3-5) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in four-plus innings.
This series concluded today. Winnipeg is off to Joliet for three games beginning Monday followed by a four-game swing through Gary, returning home next Monday for a four-game series with the RedHawks.
