Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats and Kansas City T-Bones traded the lead three times in the last three innings before Greg Jacobs' second three-run home run of the night snapped a nine all tie in the eighth to give the T-Bones a 12-9 win Sunday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Jacobs capped a four-run Kansas City eighth inning with a rocket into the T-Bones bullpen in left-center on the first pitch thrown by Andy Shipman. Jacobs blast drove home Aharon Eggleston and Damian Rolls, who had singled moments earlier against Eddie De la Cruz (4-1) to plate the tying run. Jacobs' home run ended a wild night of baseball, with each team blowing leads multiple times and the offenses combining for 21 runs on 28 hits.

Jacobs also opened the scoring in the game, blasting a first inning home run to center against Garret Holleran just six pitches into his start after Eggleston and Rolls had singled to lead off the inning. The ‘Cats got closer in the third on a two-out, two-run Steve Haake triple before Ryan Fox hit a three-run bomb against Holleran in the fourth to make it 6-2.

In the top of the fifth, however, the RailCats staged their first of two comebacks. Haake got the first run in with a ground rule double and the next batter, Jeff Beachum, delivered a two-run single to make the score 6-5. After Mike Rohde doubled to put runners on second and third, Kansas City went to the bullpen with two outs and the go-ahead runs in scoring position. That move came back to bite the T-Bones when Jordan Czarniecki ripped a triple to right-center to score both runners and cap a five-run inning that gave the RailCats a 7-6 lead.

Holleran would finish the fifth and Grant Johnson came out of the bullpen to pitch a 1-2-3 sixth inning. In the seventh, however, the T-Bones got to Johnson. After walking back-to-back hitters with one out, Neb Brown and Jacob Blackwood each hit two out singles to put Kansas City ahead 8-7.

In the eighth, the T-Bones called upon lights out reliever Daniel Sattler who had allowed earned runs in only one of his outings since June 14. Rob Marconi singled with one out against Sattler, however, and walked home when Chris Carrara came up with his biggest hit as a RailCat, a line drive triple into the right field corner to score the tying run. Carrara would come in to score the go-ahead run one batter later on a Jay Pecci single.

The 9-8 lead, however, would be short-lived as the T-Bones got their four eighth inning runs and Nate Cotton slammed the door in the ninth for his ninth save.

For the third game in a row, every RailCats starter had a hit led by Mike Massaro, who went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, his second four-hit game of the season. Carrara, Pecci and Haake each chipped in two hits as the RailCats hit three triples in a game for the first time in franchise history. Haake led the team with three RBI, giving him a personal-best and team-leading 58 this season.

Jacobs' two three-run home runs were part of a 3-for-4 day as the Kansas City right fielder drove in six. Eggleston, Rolls, Brown, Blackwood and Fox each added two hits as part of a 13-hit T-Bones attack.

The RailCats (45-32) have lost back-to-back games for the first time since July 25-26 and look to avoid three straight losses Monday at 7:05 p.m. in game four of this five-game series in Kansas City (35-42). Tony Cogan (7-6, 3.52 ERA) will start for the RailCats against a to-be-announced Kansas City hurler. The game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
