Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney made two roster moves in advance of today's Opening Day roster deadline.
The Goldeyes have placed outfielder Dan Barbero on the inactive list and placed left-handed pitcher Matt Fairel on irrevocable waivers. Because Barbero has been added to the inactive list prior to the season starting, he can activated at any time, while the 13 other American Association teams have 24 hours to claim Fairel or he will be released. Fairel was acquired from the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League yesterday, but has chosen not to report to the Goldeyes.
Winnipeg will start its second American Association season with 22 players, evenly split with 11 pitchers and 11 position players.
Fifth-year Goldeyes pitcher Ace Walker will get the start on Friday for Opening Day when Winnipeg visits the Amarillo Sox for the first of three games. Walker will be followed in the rotation by Chris Salamida, Matt Rusch, Fabian Williamson and Brian Leach.
After a nine-game road trip through Texas to start the season, the Goldeyes will face Amarillo for their home opener on Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. To date, more than 6,700 tickets have been sold for the game, leaving less than 800 tickets available.
The Goldeyes finish their pre-season schedule tonight in Kansas City with a seven-inning game against the T-Bones, which begins at 8:00 p.m. The pre-game show with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 starts at 7:30 p.m. from CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Winnipeg has gone 2-2-1 in the pre-season so far.
Fans looking to purchase season tickets, nine-game mini packs and individual game tickets for the 2012 season can call the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273), visit the Shaw Park box office or click on Ticketmaster.ca.
