Goldeyes Swept by RailCats

GARY, IN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (47-44) were defeated 8-5 by the Gary SouthShore RailCats Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard.
For the third consecutive game the Goldeyes took an early lead, crossing the plate three times in their first at-bat. Deon Stafford singled to left-centre field to bring home Wes Darvill and Max Murphy, then Stafford himself scored on Logan Hill's single to right-centre to make it 3-0 Winnipeg after half an inning.
The RailCats (37-56) reduced the deficit to one run in the bottom of the inning when Alec Olund singled to left-centre field to drive in Daniel Lingua and Thomas Walraven.
Another two-run single would give Gary the lead in the second inning as Billy Cooke brought home Marshall Skinner and Jose Mercado to make the score 4-3.
The RailCats added a run in the bottom of the third inning when Olund hit a solo home run to left field, which gave him ten runs batted in for the series.
Winnipeg pulled to within one run of Gary in the top of the sixth as Stafford came home on Sonny Ulliana's ground out to shortstop. However, the RailCats got a three-run home run from Michael Woodworth in the bottom of the inning to give them a four-run cushion at 8-4.
The Goldeyes scratched out another run in the seventh when Tyler Hill scored on Murphy's ground out to second base to make it 8-5.
Greg Harris (3-6) started for Winnipeg and took the loss. He allowed all eight Gary runs on ten hits in five and one-third innings. He struck out four and walked two. Relievers Travis Seabrooke, Zac Ryan, and Donnie Hart did not yield a run and gave up just two hits over the final two and two-thirds innings.
RailCats starter John Sheaks (1-6) earned his first win as a professional. He allowed five runs - four earned - on 11 hits over six innings, while striking out three and walking none. Tasker Strobel pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his seventh save of the season.
The Goldeyes return home to Shaw Park for their final homestand of the regular season which starts Tuesday against the Chicago Dogs. First, the game suspended August 12 at Impact Field will be completed at 5:30 p.m. Winnipeg leads that contest 8-5 in the top of the ninth inning.
