Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

FARGO, ND - Three consecutive RBI doubles in the top ninth lifted the Goldeyes to a 4-2 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Goldeyes split the series and are now 13-11, while the RedHawks fall to 13-10.

"It was a split that we definitely needed, a big victory," Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said after the game. "It showed a lot of intestinal fortitude - as they say - from our guys to win it in the ninth."

Neither team made it on the board until the top fifth, when Carlton Tanabe hit a sacrifice fly to score Reggie Abercrombie and give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead.

Former Goldeyes infielder Josh Mazzola tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom eighth, and the RedHawks took a 2-1 lead later in the inning with an RBI groundout from Ryan Wagner.

But the Goldeyes rallied in the ninth, scoring on three consecutive RBI doubles from Jacob Rogers, Reggie Abercrombie and Wes Darvill to win the game 4-2.

Right-hander Edwin Carl (2-1, 3.45) allowed only three hits through six innings and took a no-decision in his fifth start for the Goldeyes this season. Brandon Shimo allowed the two RedHawks runs in the eighth, while Eric Eadington (1-0, 1.35) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win, and Jailen Peguero allowed only one hit in the ninth for the save. Fargo-Moorhead starter Tyler Herron (3-1, 0.90) allowed three earned runs on six hits through 8.1 innings for the loss.

Overall, Vaeth said he was impressed with Winnipeg's performance on the mound.

"Edwin matched Herron," he said. "He put zeroes on the board. That's what we needed from him. Even though they scored [in the eighth], we got consecutive outs. Eadington did a great job to come out and shut the door."

Adam Heisler extended his safe hitting streak to nine games with two-out double in the top eighth. Reggie Abercrombie led the Goldeyes offence with two hits, one RBI and two runs scored in three at-bats.

"We need that big guy," Vaeth said about Abercrombie. "He's our leader. He had great at-bats today. He's been struggling lately, but he was good at the plate for us.

"You've got to go out and grind it and battle every night. I'm real proud of the guys for coming out and doing that today."

The Goldeyes have Monday off but will send left-hander Kyle Anderson to the mound against the Texas Airhogs for the first of a three-game home series on Tuesday at 7.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games are available at the Shaw Park box office or by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting ticketmaster.ca. All Goldeyes games are broadcast live on 93.7 CJNU and at cjnu.ca.
