Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that the baseball club has signed rookie infielder Zach Williams.
Williams, 22, will make his professional debut with the Goldeyes tonight after spending the last two seasons with the NAIA Judson University Eagles in Elgin, Ill. He hit .311 with the Eagles this past spring and started all 56 games. Williams also produced 31 RBI, 12 doubles and five triples. On the base paths, he was good on 10 of 12 stolen base attempts. His 10 swiped bags were tied for the team lead.
In 2009, Williams finished second in team batting with a .374 average. He also led the Eagles with 40 RBI and .578 slugging percentage.
For the last few weeks, Williams has been playing with the USA Military All-Stars - a touring team that plays collegiate summer teams and minor league affiliated and independent teams across the United States.
The Goldeyes now have 22 players on its active roster, evenly split between pitchers and position players.
Winnipeg continues a three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones tonight at Canwest Park. Great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
