ZION, Ill. - The Lake County Fielders (30-41) lost another tough game to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (36-36) 10-6 in extra innings.
The game was scoreless until Christian Guerrero attacked again, crushing a solo homerun over the centerfield wall to put the RailCats on the board in the fourth inning after hitting the game-tying homerun in Friday night's loss to the RailCats. The Fielders tied the game in their half of the inning with an RBI single from Cody Strait to score Josh Short who drew a leadoff walk off starting pitcher Nolan Nicholson.
The RailCats added two more in the fifth with an two-run RBI double off the bat of Klein to score Mike Reese and Chris Carrara.
Josh Short led off the sixth inning with his league-leading 24th homerun. The Fielders took the lead in the seventh after Kevin Haas tied the game at three runs with an RBI fielder's choice that scored Kyle Higgins. Juan Valdes then smacked a two-run homer over the left field walk to take the 5-3 lead over the RailCats.
Marco Gonzalez came in to pitch a perfect eighth inning, but the RailCats rallied in the ninth to take the lead off closing pitcher Chris Homer who gave up four hits and three runs to give the RailCats the 6-5 lead. Mike Rohde led off with a double, Randall Simon walked with two outs, and Carrara hit an RBI single. Klein came to the plate and bunted over the head of Homer to bring the tying run across the plate. The RailCats took the lead off a Massaro RBI single.
The Fielders pushed the game into extra innings for the second night in a row when Juan Valdes led off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Valdes came around to score on an error by pitcher Aaron Cook to tie the game at 6.
But the resilient RailCats pulled away in the tenth scoring four runs off of four hits. Jay Pecci led off with a single, followed by a Guerrero double. Pecci scored on a Chad Lundahl wild pitch. Carrara plated two with an RBI single, followed up with a Klein RBI single to cap off the scoring and take the extra-inning win.
The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow at 1:00pm on Lindenhurst Health and Fitness Family Day. The Fielders will send RH Ryan Bicondoa (2-5, 4.62) to the mound opposite Gary's LH Brad Halsey (4-6, 4.52).
