JOLIET, IL - Rafael Mendez smacked a solo homer in the ninth and the Joliet JackHammers (36-33) had the tying run thrown out at home as the Schaumburg Flyers (26-44) earned a 5-4 victory Friday night in front of 4,363 fans at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers dropped to 2-5 against the Flyers this season.
The JackHammers trailed 5-3 entering the ninth, but managed a rally with two outs. Joshua Giles retired the first two hitters before Mendez took Giles deep to left field to make it 5-4. Kevin Rios then coaxed a walk on a 3-2 pitch, bouncing Giles in favor of Brian McCullough. Brad Correll hit a slow roller towards first that Kit Pellow cut off and threw away with McCullough covering the bag. McCullough raced after the ball and threw home to catch a diving Rios for the game's final out.
The victory made winner out of Alain Quijano (3-7), who went the first six frames allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Joliet jumped out on Quijano with three in the first. Rios walked and Correll singled to put two runners on with one out. Jon Nelson followed with his 21st home run, a three run shot over the wall in right for the early 3-0 lead.
Schaumburg clawed back in the fifth against Bear Bay (5-5), getting their own three run homer. Dan Parzyk and Ruddy Yan singled with Brandon Newton launching a Bay offering over the fence in right center to tie the game at three.
The Flyers plated two more over the next two innings, taking their first lead in the game in the sixth. Pellow doubled and moved up to third on a Mario Delgado ground out. Joey Gomes lifted a sacrifice fly to put Schaumburg out in front 4-3.
Bay balked in a run in the seventh with runners at the corners and one out. Parzyk singled again and moved to second on a Tom Fitzgerald sacrifice bunt. Yan collected a base hit to right and Bay failed to come set to plate the fifth run.
The JackHammer ace took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits in seven innings. Bay struck out five and walked two, allowing the one home run.
Roberto Mena led the âHammers with two hits, both doubles, while Nelson knocked in a game high three runs.
Parzyk and Yan each had two hits for the Flyers, with Newton knocking in three on the long ball.
The JackHammers and Flyers resume a three game series tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. Kyle Dahman (2-1) will make his first start of the season opposite Brett Harker (5-7). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
