Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes won the middle game of a three-game series tonight, downing the Joliet JackHammers 12-7 before 6,487 at Canwest Park.
Joliet opened the scoring off Andrew Cruse in the first. Adam Klein singled to lead it off, stole second, went to third on a Rob Dahlberg single and scored on a Kevin Rios single. Winnipeg responded in the second off Jason Novak. Brent Metheny singled with one out, Cody Ehlers walked and Mark Minicozzi doubled to score Metheny. Ehlers went to third on the play and scored on a Cory Patton sacrifice fly.
The visitors came right back in the third. Klein hit a ball deep into the hole at first. Ehlers fielded it and tossed to Cruse covering first, but his throw was off line and Klein was safe. Dahlberg singled and Rios attempted to sacrifice both runners up. Metheny was unable to field the bunt and the bases were loaded. Klein scored when Freddie Thon bounced into a double play and Dahlberg scored on a Tim Alberts single. The hosts squared it at three in the bottom of three when Juan Diaz hit the first pitch he saw deep to left for his league-leading 29th home run, tying Sean Hearn (1998) for the most home runs in a single season in franchise history. But it didn't stay tied for long.
Eric Scriven drew a two-out walk and went to third on a Klein double. Both scored on a Dahlberg single. Down 5-3, the Goldeyes narrowed the gap in the fourth. Metheny singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a Minicozzi single. Joliet regained the two-run lead in the fifth off Mark Michael. With two out, Wally Backman Jr. walked, moved up on a Mike Garcia singled and scored on a Christian Lopez single to make it 6-4. But the Goldeyes came right back again and chased Novak while doing so.
Vince Harrison singled to lead it off, Metheny singled with one out and Ehlers singled to score Harrison. After Minicozzi walked to load the bases, Patton doubled to score Metheny and Ehlers and that was it for Novak. Michael Moore came in and got Adam Frost to end the inning. Winnipeg added to its lead in the sixth. With two out, Metheny was hit by a pitch, Ehlers singled and that was it for Moore. Chad Blackwell came in and got Minicozzi to ground one to Backman Jr. at third. He tried but was unable to tag Metheny, forcing him to throw to first, but his throw pulled Thon off the bag. Seeing this, Metheny raced home and it was 8-6. Patton followed with a single to left that scored Ehlers while Minicozzi wasn't far behind when Scriven overran the ball.
It became 12-6 in the eighth. Ehlers and Minicozzi singled with one out and both scored on a Patton double. Joliet concluded the scoring in the ninth off Jordan Stewart. Rios singled to lead it off, went corner-to-corner on a Thon single and scored when Alberts banged into a double play.
Michael (3-5) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits in one-plus innings, fanning two and walking two. Novak (2-6) took the loss after getting stung for seven runs on 10 hits in four-plus innings with four walks and a strikeout. Stewart allowed a run on two hits in two-plus innings to pick up his second save.
