Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed right-handed pitcher Edwin Carl on Monday morning.

Carl was 6-1 with a 2.10 ERA for the Goldeyes last year in seven starts and one relief appearance. The Farmington, New Mexico native struck out 62, walked 14, and allowed only three home runs over 55.2 innings pitched. During his Goldeyes debut on August 2nd versus Kansas City, Carl struck out 10, while allowing one earned run over six-plus innings in a no-decision. 10 days later, Carl tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout versus Sioux Falls in which he racked up nine strikeouts. The right-hander added another complete game in his final start on September 6th, yielding just one earned run and striking out 11. Carl recorded eight or more strikeouts in five of his seven starts, and allowed three or fewer earned runs in six of them. The 27-year-old Carl also pitched at least six innings in all seven of his starts.

Carl began 2015 with the Frontier League's Schaumburg Boomers where he struck out 65 batters in 63.1 innings over 11 starts. Following his time with the Goldeyes, Carl received an opportunity with the Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers. Most recently, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Carl pitched for the Australian Baseball League's Perth Heat. In 14 starts this winter, Carl was 4-2 for Perth while finishing fifth in the Australian Baseball League with a 2.95 ERA.

"I'm very excited to announce that Edwin is returning," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney . "He was fantastic last year when he joined us, and I'm hopeful that he can pick up where he left off. Edwin works extremely hard, and competes as well as any starter that we have ever had in Winnipeg. I'm looking forward to watching him pitch every fifth day."

Carl originally signed with the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent in 2010. In five professional seasons, Carl is 22-14 with a 3.39 ERA in 125 appearances, 32 of them as a starting pitcher. Carl has averaged 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings during his career against just 2.7 walks. The Royals assigned Carl to the prestigious Arizona Fall League in 2012 where he pitched to a 2.77 ERA for the Surprise Saguaros, and went on to reach the Double-A level the following summer. Carl pitched two seasons of college baseball at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, New Mexico), striking out 79 batters in 86.0 total innings from 2009-10.

The Goldeyes now have 21 players under contract for the 2016 season, and plan to announce the addition of two Canadian players on Wednesday. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 7th.

Notes: Carl earned all-star honours in the rookie level Pioneer League in 2011 after posting a 1.33 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 33.0 innings pitched...Carl missed the 2014 season due to an autoimmune disease...prior to the University of New Mexico, Carl pitched two seasons at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona...last season, Carl became just the ninth pitcher in Goldeyes' history (and only the fourth since 2002) to average 10.0 or more strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 50.0 innings pitched)...Ian Thomas holds the Goldeyes' single-season record with 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 2011 (57.1 innings pitched)
