Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-6 in a spring training game at Shaw Park on Wednesday evening.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Matt McCann drew a two-out walk and stole second base. After falling behind 0-2, Grant Heyman worked the count full before lining a single to centre field that scored McCann with the tying run.
After Tyler Beardsley pitched a perfect top of the seventh, the Goldeyes scored twice in the bottom half to take the lead. Jonathan Moroney led off and beat out an infield single on a groundball in the hole at shortstop. Moroney advanced to second two batters later when Ty Moore ripped a single to right. Moroney took third when Reynaldo Rodriguez lined out to deep left-centre, and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch from RedHawks' reliever Travis Ballew. Moore went first to third on the wild pitch before Reggie Abercrombie singled to right to make it 7-5.
In the top of the eighth, Devan Ahart worked a two-out, bases loaded walk that cut the Goldeyes' lead to 7-6 before Randolph Oduber flied out to right field. The teams agreed to end the game after the top of the eighth.
Winnipeg took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Andrew Sohn drew a leadoff walk, took second on a single to right from Victor Cruzado, and scored the game's first run when Rodriguez doubled to left. Abercrombie walked to load the bases, and two batters later, David Bergin grounded a two-run double down the left field line.
Patrick O'Donnell cut the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single through the right side in the top of the second. Goldeyes' starter Edwin Carl limited the damage, striking out the side and stranding the bases loaded.
Kevin McGovern relieved Carl in the top of the third and struck out the side in order. In the bottom of the inning, Jose Sermo plated Rodriguez from second on a bloop double to shallow right that fell in front of O'Donnell to make it 4-1.
The RedHawks pulled within 4-3 with two runs in the fifth. With runners on first and third and no outs, Oduber drove in Maikol Gonzalez on a grounder in front of the plate. Tommy Mendonca followed with a line drive double to right-centre that scored Ahart. Sohn then robbed Charlie Valerio on a line drive to shortstop that was turned into an inning-ending double play.
The RedHawks took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from O'Donnell and Derrick Fox, as well as an RBI single by Brennan Metzger.
Beardsley (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Goldeyes, while Cameron McVey earned his first save of the spring.
Ballew (0-1) took the loss for the RedHawks.
Carl allowed one earned run on four hits over two innings in a no-decision. Carl walked two and struck out four.
