Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes concluded the regular season in style tonight, dumping the Schaumburg Flyers 7-2 before 8,212 at Canwest Park, the second-largest crowd in ballpark history.

Winnipeg opened the scoring off Tom Lyons in the second. Kevin West drew a lead-off walk, stole second, went to third on a Dee Brown ground out and scored on a Brent Metheny ground out. The hosts added to their lead in the third. With Cory Patton at first on a one-out walk, Josh Asanovich singled and Juan Diaz singled to score Patton. It became 7-0 in the fourth.

West singled, Dee Brown singled and Metheny doubled to score West, ending the night for Lyons. After giving up a single to Cody Ehlers that scored Brown, Kris Jiggits got the next two hitters before Asanovich hammered one deep to left. Schaumburg got on the board in the seventh off Ace Walker. Antoan Richardson hit a lead-off double, tagged up and advanced on a Victor Ferrante fly out and scored on a Richard Mercado single. It became 7-2 in the eighth. Lyndon Poole doubled to lead it off and scored on a Jeff Dunbar single. That was as close as it would get.

Walker (12-6) went the distance to get the win, picking up his league-leading and franchise-record sixth complete game. He allowed both runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout, getting some help when his defence turned a franchise-record five double plays. Lyons took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in three innings with two walks and a strikeout.

Winnipeg is off tomorrow to prepare for its opening round playoff series beginning Wednesday with the RedHawks. The first two games are in Fargo with game three switching to Canwest Park on Friday at 7 p.m. Great seats starting at just $8 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
