Schaumburg Flyers News Release

WINNIPEG-A Josh Asanovich three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth helped the Goldeyes defeat the Schaumburg Flyers in the final game of the 2009 season for Schaumburg 7-2.

Kevin West helped manufacture Winnipeg's first run in the bottom of the second. The right fielder walked, stole second, and scored on a Brent Metheny groundout.

In the bottom of the third, Cory Patton walked, Asanovich singled, and Juan Diaz singled into the gap. Lyndon Poole dove and appeared to make the grab but the ball fell out as he hit the ground allowing Patton to score the second run for Winnipeg.

The Goldeyes broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth off Flyers starter Tom Lyons. Back-to-back singles by West and Dee Brown brought Metheny to the plate and he roped an RBI double to chase Lyons. Kris Jiggitts came on in relief and gave up an RBI single to Cody Ehlers. After recording two outs, Jiggitts gave up a three-run jack to Asanovich, his ninth of the season. Winnipeg opened up a 7-0 lead. Asanovich went 2-4 with three RBIs.

The Flyers finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Antoan Richardson led the inning off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Richard Mercado through the hole on the right side of the infield. Richardson finished the game 2-4 with a run scored.

In the top of the eighth, Poole led off with a double, and scored on a single by Jeff Dunbar to cut the lead to 7-2. But like the seventh, the rally ended on a double play ball, and the Flyers 2009 season ended with a 7-2 loss north of the border.

Ace Walker pitched his sixth complete game of the season, improving to 12-6 on the year. Lyons ends the season with a record of 2-6. The 8,212 fans at Canwest Park was the second biggest crowd in the history of the stadium, and the Goldeyes turned a record five double plays in the game.

The Goldeyes finish their regular season in second place with a record of 55-41. Winnipeg will face Fargo-Moorhead in the first round of the Northern League playoffs.

The Flyers season ends in fifth place with a record of 43-53, an improvement by 13 wins, which is good for the best improvement in the Northern League. And after finishing 32 games out of first place in 2008, they were in the hunt for the playoffs all the way until the final week of the season.
