Piepkorn and Sevier Named Northern League Player and Pitcher of the Week

Third baseman Jeremiah Piepkorn of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Joliet JackHammers pitcher Nate Sevier received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending August 30th , 2009.

Piepkorn, who leads the league with a .339 average, batted .423 (11-for-26) with eight runs scored, two doubles, a league-high four home runs, and seven RBI in the week. He started the week red-hot going a combined 10-for-17 (.588) in the four- game series versus Kansas City T-Bones (August 24th -27th ). In that series, he hit a home run in each of the four games.

The 6-3, 215-pounder, is playing his sixth season of professional baseball. With only one game to go in the regular season, he currently has a .012 lead over his teammate Mike Coles for the 2009 Northern League batting title. He also ranks third overall in the league in home runs (19) and RBI (73).

Peipkorn was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 after playing collegiately at North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND). He played four seasons in the Reds farm system where he batted a combined .249 with 49 home runs in 351 games played. Piepkorn signed with the RedHawks on July 29, 2008 and played in the final 31 games last season, including all three playoff games. In 2009, he has played in 92 of 94 games for Fargo-Moorhead.

Sevier, who is playing in his third season with the Joliet JackHammers, struck out a league-high 13 batters on August 29th versus the Kansas City T-Bones. In his only start of the week, he went 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA allowing only five hits, walking none and yielding only one run over 8.1 innings of work on his way to being named Northern League Pitcher of the Week.

After being activated from the inactive list on July 14th , the 29-year-old right-hander is beginning to regain his form that won 13 games and tossed a no-hitter for the 'Hammers in 2007. Over his last four starts dating back to August 12th , he is 2-1 with a 1.20 ERA. On the year, he is 3-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 10 games (nine starts).

The eight-year veteran played collegiately at Mesa Community College (Mesa, AZ) and began his professional career in 2002 with the Western League as a non-drafted free agent, then was signed only a month into the season by the Seattle Mariners organization. After one year in the Mariners farm system, he made his first stint in the Northern League winning six games for the Kansas City T-Bones in 2003. Following a season each in the Padres and Cubs organizations, he played one year in the independent Golden League prior to being signed by the JackHammers on February 26th , 2007. In three seasons with Joliet, he is a combined 20-16 with a 4.71 ERA.
