Goldeyes Get Huge Victory
June 30, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes pounded out a huge win over the Schaumburg Flyers tonight before a season-high crowd of 7,536 at Canwest Park. But they suffered an equally huge loss when all-star shortstop Wes Long sustained what is likely a season-ending ankle injury.
Winnipeg opened the scoring off Edwin Almonte in the first with some small ball. Josh Asanovich, Kevin West and Juan Diaz all hit one-out singles, the latter scoring Asanovich and sending West to third, from where he scored on a wild pitch. Diaz went to second on the play and scored on a single by Dee Brown, extending his league-leading hit streak to 21 games. Already down three runs after just one, it would only get worse for Schaumburg in the second.
Adam Frost led off with a single and was safe at second on a Dustin Richardson grounder when shortstop Travis Brown's throw pulled Stephen Yoo off the bag. With Long at the plate, Almonte uncorked a wild pitch. Frost broke for third and ended up scoring when Mercado rifled the throw into left. Richardson went to second on the play, to third on an infield single by Long and scored as Asanovich's second hit of the day made it 5-0. Long scored on West's second hit of the day before Diaz walked to load the bases. Cody Ehlers doubled to score Asanovich and West and send Diaz to third, from where he scored on a Brown sacrifice fly and that was it for Almonte. Garrett Rieck entered and served up a double to Cory Patton that scored Ehlers. Patton went to third on a Frost ground out and scored on a passed ball to make it 11-0.
In the top of the third, Stephen Yoo singled but was erased on a ground ball by Mercado for the first out. Travis Ezi grounded one to Ehlers at first, who stepped on the bag for the first out and then threw to Long at second to get Mercado. In attempting to break up the double play, Mercado slid hard and took out Long. He was taken to hospital, where x-rays showed a fracture of his left ankle.
The hosts made it 12-0 in the bottom of the inning when Patton drew a bases-loaded walk before the Flyers got on the board in the sixth off Andrew Cruse. Richard Mercado drew a lead-off walk and scored on a one-out double by Travis Wilson. They made it 12-2 in the seventh on singles by Vince Harrison, Craig Maddox and Yoo before the Goldeyes came back with four runs off Jeff Dunbar.
Kurt Crowell reached on an error by Yoo, Asanovich singled and West singled to score Crowell. Diaz doubled to score Asanovich and that was it for Dunbar. Cephas Howard came in and struck Ehlers out before Brown doubled to score Diaz. Schaumburg got one back in the eighth off Derek Feldkamp when Victor Ferrante hit his seventh home run of the year and added one more in the ninth. Craig Maddox drew a lead-off walk, went to third on a double by Howard and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mercado.
Cruse (3-3) was the winner, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Almonte (3-4) took the loss after getting stung for 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout in less than two innings.
