Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes look like a tired baseball team on Wednesday night.

Starter Nick Hernandez was tagged for seven runs on nine hits over the first five innings and the offence just never got rolling as the Goldeyes were whipped 7-2 by the visiting Sioux Falls Canaries.

With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 43-52 on the season and will fail to finish .500 for only the third time in franchise history (2005 and 2010). The Fish are a disappointing 18-27 at home this season.

The Goldeyes were down 4-0 when they put their first run on the board. Adam Heisler led off with a bunt single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casio Grider and scored on a single by Casey Haerther.

It was 7-1 when they scored their second run. Brad Boyer walked, James Boddicker walked and Heisler singled to drive in Boyer.

But that was it. Despite a couple of singles from Boddicker and Heisler to open the eighth inning, the Goldeyes couldn't score another run. In the end, the Goldeyes finished with two runs on seven hits while Sioux Falls had seven runs on nine hits. Player of the game Adam Heisler led the Goldeyes with three singles, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. He also raised his team-leading batting average to .331.

Sioux Falls starter Shawn Blackwell (4-9, 3.84 ERA) earned the win for the Canaries, while Hernandez (8-8, 3.25 ERA) suffered the loss.

The Goldeyes and Canaries will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Shaw Park. Lefthander Kyle Anderson (4-6, 5.01) will take to the mound for the Goldeyes, while right-hander Ray Hanson (1-0, 5.25 ERA) will get the start for Sioux Falls. The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.

Tickets for all of the Goldeyes' final five home games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
