Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-22) lost their second straight 5-3 to the Sioux Falls Canaries (14-26) at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.
Winnipeg starter Edwin Carl recorded eight straight outs to open the game before Ethan Chapman advanced to first on a hit by pitch in the top third. Chapman later scored on a wild pitch to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead, but the Goldeyes responded with one of their own later in the inning. Casio Grider reached first on an error, stole second base and advanced to third before Maikol Gonzalez drove him home with a single to centre.
In the fourth, Jacob Rogers drew a two-out walk, and Casio Grider followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead.
Neither team scored again until the sixth, when Jake Taylor hit his fourth home run of the season to drive in three and put Sioux Falls up 4-3.
The Canaries never gave up that lead and added an insurance run on an RBI single from Michael Pair in the top ninth to win the game 5-3 and the series 2-1.
Carl (3-4, 4.95) pitched 6 1/3 innings, struck out seven and allowed four runs on four hits for the loss. Sioux Falls starter Shawn Blackwell (5-3, 6.07) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits through six innings for the win, and Madison Boer threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
The Goldeyes begin a seven-game road trip with the first of three against the Gary SouthShore RailCats tonight at 6:10 p.m. Right-hander Duke von Schamann (3-4, 4.60) will take the mound for Winnipeg.
