Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA- The offense of the Gary SouthShore RailCats exploded for 10 runs on 14 hits to beat the Sioux City Explorers on Sunday. The RailCats' (24-18) 14 hits were more than they had in the first two games of the series combined.
Sioux City's (21-22) starting pitcher PJ Francescon didn't make it through three innings in his X's debut. The right-hander was roughed up for five earned runs on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
Gary SouthShore starter Alex Gunn was the opposite. The lefty registered his second straight quality start in a solid seven-inning performance. He gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked four batters and struck out one.
The story of the night was the RailCats' offense, though. Brennan Metzger, Frank Martinez, Jeremy Hamilton, and EJ Devarie all recorded multi-hit days. Hamilton and Devarie's contributions were especially notable because they each had two RBIs.
Hamilton started off the offense in the 2nd inning by scoring on a wild pitch. The runs came in a flurry in the 3rd. The Cats managed four base hits and Hamilton hit a double to chase Francescon out of the game and score five runs in the inning.
The RailCats manufactured runs in the 6th and 7th innings before capping the game off with two more runs in the 9th.
The two relievers for Sioux City gave up a combined five runs in 6.1 innings. On the other side, the Cats pen hurled two shutdown innings. Christian Herstine handled the 8th and Santiago Rodriguez pitched a scoreless final frame.
The win in the rubber match gave the RailCats their sixth consecutive series win. They are now 4-0 in series-deciding games. Gary SouthShore knocked the X's to third place in the division and held on to their two game lead in the Central.
The RailCats sent 37 batters to the plate compared to 29 for Sioux City. Hamilton had a hand in five RaiCats runs. Every Cat in the lineup had a hit in the game. Gary SouthShore enjoyed four extra-base hits in the contest.
The RailCats will try to continue their momentum into an upcoming seven game homestand. They host the Winnipeg Goldeyes tomorrow, July 4th, at 6:10 PM. Coverage begins at 5:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
