Goldeyes Doubled by RailCats, Series Evened

July 16, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

As Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has said all season long, "It's all about starting pitching."

On Thursday at Shaw Park, Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson was roughed up for eight runs on 15 hits as the Gary SouthShore RailCats beat the Fish 14-7 to even their four-game series at a win apiece.

In the end, Gary scored 14 runs on an incredible 28 hits - 23 of them were singles. And yes, that's tied for the most hits ever recorded by one team in an American Association game.

As has happened far too many times this season, the Goldeyes were out of it almost before the game got started.

Gary put up a run on two hits in the first inning, three runs on four hits (thanks to a three-run homer by J.D. Pulfer) in the second and four runs on seven hits in the third. It was 8-1 after three innings and this one was over.

With the victory, Gary improved to 24-27 and pulled two full games ahead of the 22-29 Goldeyes in the American Association wild card race. Both teams still trail wild card leader Kansas City by more than a handful of games.

The Goldeyes finished with seven runs on 14 hits. Goldeyes player of the game Brad Boyer led the Fish with two doubles and two singles in four trips. He also had two runs batted in and two runs scored.

The Fish scored a run in the second as Ryan Babineau singled and came home on a double by Boyer. They added two in the fourth when Josh Mazzola was safe on an error, Jon Weber doubled in Mazzola and Boyer singled home Weber. They added another in the sixth when Boyer doubled and came home on a single by Chris Robinson.

The Fish put up two more in the seventh as Casio Grider beat out an infield hit then scored on a double by Josh Mazzola. Mazzola scored on a double by Bobby Spencer, his first hit and first RBI as a member of the Goldeyes. The Fish tallied another in the eighth as Boyer singled, Robinson beat out an infield hit and Casio Grider singled to send Boyer home.

Gary reliever Dan Ludwig (1-0, 1.00 ERA) got credit for the win, while Anderson (1-4, 6.28 ERA) was tagged with the loss. Anderson set a dubious franchise record. By giving up 15 hits, he set the mark for most hits allowed by one Goldeyes pitcher in a single game. For the second time this season, first baseman Casey Haerther mopped up and for the second time this season, he pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Goldeyes and RailCats will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 at Shaw Park. Right-hander Coby Cowgill (2-2, 4.82 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Charlie Rosario (8-3, 3.46 ERA) will take to the bump for Gary.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
