Familiar Pattern Sends RailCats to Another Road Loss

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Winnipeg, MB, CA July 15, 2015- Take a struggling RailCats offense. Add another quality quality start for an opponent. Then toss in the long ball threat and the Winnipeg Goldeyes won easily 5-2 over the Gary South Shore RailCats in the opener of a four game series Wednesday night at Shaw Park.

Andy Roberts got the nod for the South Shore and looked pretty good early keeping the Goldeyes off the board for the first two innings before a questionable balk call made it 1-0 Winnipeg. With runners at the corners at two outs Roberts attempt to pick off Casio Grider at first who had singled was ruled a balk bringing home Brad Boyer from third, who led off the inning with a single.

Despite that setback Roberts seemed to still be in a good spot, but the RailCats offense could not take any of the pressure off the lefty. Tony Smith tossed the ninth quality start against the RailCats in the last 10 games retiring the first seven RailCats. The Cats managed to scratch out two singles back to back from Michael Schroeder and new RailCat Jose Sermo, but a double play ball from the bat of JD Pulfer induced by Smith took care of that threat in the top of the third.

After both starters took care of the other club in 1-2-3 fashion in the fourth the Goldeyes dialed up the deep ball that has plagued the RailCats staff all season. The South Shore came into the game allowing 37 home runs second most in the league. With two outs Chris Robinson reached on what looked like a harmless two out hit. Then veteran catcher Luis Alen drove a Roberts offering just over the wall in left to make it 3-0.

In the sixth the Goldeyes followed the same plan. Adam Heisler started the inning with a double to the right field corner. Casey Haerther flew out to deep left at the warning track, but it allowed Heisler to advance to third. The next fly ball to left from third baseman Josh Mazzolla went 10 feet farther just clearing the wall in left to make it 5-0. It was the seventh allowed by Roberts and the clubs 28th on the road.

Gary waited until the last inning to avoid being shut out for the third time in the last nine games scoring a pair of runs. Adam Taylor tripled with two outs off of Goldeye reliever Mike Noteware. Jon Jones then rolled one through the five and six hole to score Taylor. The Cats added another run after an error from Casio Grider. With Drew Martinez batting and the tying run on beck a wild pitch brought home the second run but In the end it was not enough as the RailCats lost their fifth straight road game and for their seventh loss in 10 games.

Tony Smith (3-1) was the winner for Winnipeg holding the RailCats to four hits in six innings, while Roberts did work six but surrendered all five earned runs to drop his record to (0-5). Juan Peguero (10) came in to notch the late save while Kevin Osaki worked two shutout innings of relief for Gary.

The RailCats trail in the Wild Card race by six games to Kansas City and the Central Division to Sioux City by 12.5 games. The RailCats will try to turn around the month of July, where they have limped to a 4-10 record, Thursday night in game two of the series. The American Association pitcher of the week, Charle Rosario (8-3, 3.45) will take his turn for the RailCats, while the "Fish" will send out RHP Coby Cowgill (2-2, 4.82). The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and on line at RailCatsBaseball.com.
