Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes won again this afternoon, dumping the Joliet JackHammers 9-4 before 6,555 at Canwest Park. With the win, Winnipeg increased its lead over Schaumburg in the standings to five games.
Winnipeg opened the scoring off Ryan Gehring in the second when Dee Brown doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Kurt Crowell. Joliet responded in the third off Andrew Cruse. After hitting a lead-off single, Wally Backman Jr. stole second and was sacrificed to third by Danny Cox. Catcher Dustin Richardson attempted to pick him off but ended hitting him, allowing Backman Jr. to score as the ball rolled into left field. Things stayed that way until the Goldeyes batted in the fifth. Crowell singled with one out and, with two out, scored on Wes Long's league-leading 14th double.
Absolutely solid through six, Andrew Cruse was lifted for Derek Feldkamp to start the seventh. After giving up a single and a walk to the first two hitters, Feldkamp had allowed more baserunners than Cruse did in all of his six innings. With two on and none out, Freddie Thon forced Phil Avlas at second, putting men on the corners with one out. Tydus Meadows singled to score Rios and tie it and, after Andrew Pinckney moved both runners up with a ground out, Backman Jr. singled to make it 4-2 for the visitors. But the hosts came right back in a big way.
Brown started the bottom of seven with his second double of the afternoon, tagged up and went to third on a long fly out by Cody Ehlers and scored when Rios booted a Crowell grounder at short. Richardson doubled to score Crowell and tie it, ending the day for Gehring. Chad Blackwell came in and got Long to fly out before Josh Asanovich singled to score Richardson. Kevin West followed with his team-leading seventh home run and it was 7-4.
Winnipeg concluded the scoring in the eighth off David Byard. Cory Patton singled to lead it off, went to third on a single by Brown and scored on an Ehlers sacrifice fly. Richardson followed with his second double of the afternoon to score Brown and that was it.
Aaron Odom (3-1) was the winner after allowing one hit in an inning of shutout relief. Gehring (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six-plus innings, fanning two and walking none.
This series concludes Monday at noon. Winnipeg has yet to name a starter while Jason Richardson replies for Joliet, so take an extended lunch break and come out to watch the best team in the Northern League.
