Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - An eighth inning single from Steve Haake scored Mike Massaro to put Gary in front, and the Flyers left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the eighth, falling 3-2 to the RailCats Sunday afternoon in front of 4,090 at Alexian Field.
The RailCats got on the board in the second when Haake led off the inning with a double and scored on Cristian Guerrero's single. Gary got another run an inning later, with Rob Marconi singling and advancing twice on wild pitches, then scoring on a Massaro sacrifice fly.
Both of Schaumburg's runs would come with two outs in the fifth. Jason Colson led off with a single and came around to score on Travis Ezi's double. Jeff Dunbar knocked a base hit to right, and Ezi slid into home to tie the game at two. It would remain tied into the eighth when Haake scored Massaro off of Flyers reliever Cephas Howard.
The Flyers threat in the bottom of the eighth began with back-to-back singles from Ezi and Dunbar. After Vince Harrison popped out to short, T.J. Wilson tried to bunt his way on, but was out on a close play at first on a call that was argued emphatically by Flyers manager Mike Busch. Jose Valdez then drew a two-out walk to load the bags, but Victor Ferrante popped out to right on the first pitch from Gary reliever Edwin Walker to end the potential rally.
Both starting pitchers were fantastic, with Dustin Glant allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings for the Flyers, and Tom Thornton scattering six hits over six innings of work, allowing two runs. Howard (2-1) was tagged with the loss, while Walker improved to 2-0 with the win. Andy Shipman allowed a two-out single to Travis Brown in the ninth, but picked up his fourth save since coming to the RailCats from Kansas City at the beginning of June.
The Flyers have Monday off before welcoming the Joliet JackHammers to Alexian Field for a three-game set, starting with a 7:05 game on Tuesday night.
