
JackHammers Fall to Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-9) scored seven runs over the 7th and 8th innings to overtake a 4-2 Joliet lead and earn a 9-4 win over the Joliet JackHammers (12-22) before 6,555 fans at CanWest Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Goldeyes scored a single run in the 2nd inning against JackHammers LHP Ryan Gehring (1-2). RF Cory Patton (1-4) grounded out and LF Dee Brown (3-4) smacked a double to left field. He advanced to third base on a fly out by 1B Cody Ehlers (0-3) and scored on a single by CF Kurt Crowell (2-4) for a 1-0 Winnipeg lead.
The JackHammers came back to tie the game at 1-1 thanks to some aggressive base running by RF Wally Backman, Jr. (2-3). He singled to lead off the inning and stole second base. 2B Danny Cox (0-2) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Backman, Jr. to third base. He scored on a throwing error by Goldeyes C Dustin Richardson for a 1-1 tied score.
Winnipeg pushed across a run in the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead. Crowell singled and scored on a double by SS Wes Long (1-5).
Joliet walked out of the dugout in the 7th inning and pushed across three runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead. SS Kevin Rios (2-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to C Phil Avlas (0-3). 1B Freddie Thon (0-4) reached base on a fielder's choice that forced out Avlas at second base.
DH Tydus Meadows (1-4) ripped an RBI single to score Rios for a 2-2 tied score. 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-4) grounded out to advance both Thon and Meadows into scoring position. Backman, Jr. hit an RBI single to score both men for a 4-2 Joliet lead.
The Goldeyes scored five runs in the seventh inning. Brown doubled to lead off the inning. Crowell then reached base on an error that allowed Brown to score from second base to bring the Goldeyes within one run at 4-3. Crowell scored on a double by Richardson to tie the score at 4-4.
Gehring departed the game after Richardson's at-bat. He allowed five runs, (three earned runs), on eight hits in six and one-thirds innings pitched.
The Goldeyes tacked on two more runs in the inning on a two-run home run from 3B Kevin West (2-4) against JackHammers RHP Chad Blackwell.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish their four-game series on Monday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. RHP Jason Richardson (1-4, 3.80) gets the start for Joliet against a yet-to-be announced starter for Winnipeg.
