Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes came agonizingly close to ending a five-game losing streak, but the Goldeyes bullpen once again dropped the ball.
Joliet left fielder Jonathan Wyatt hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning, as the Goldeyes lost 13-6 to the JackHammers Sunday afternoon at Canwest Park before 6,179 fans.
The Goldeyes got behind 4-0 after the first inning, but battled back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and another in the seventh inning to tie the game.
Antony Bello takes the loss. He left the bases loaded when he departed from the game and Chad Benefield that gave up the grand slam one batter later.
Ross Stout gets the win in a relief appearance for Joliet.
Goldeyes Notes
The Goldeyes losing streak now sits at six games heading into the Northern League All-Star Break.
Winnipeg was swept by the JackHammers this weekend. It's just the second time in franchise history the Goldeyes have been swept in a four-game series.
The Fish enter the all-star break with an even 25-25 record. The last time Winnipeg was at .500 was after the second game of the season way back on May 21.
The Goldeyes finish the season series with Joliet with a 6-9 record, including losing the last five games and six of eight at Canwest Park.
Today's loss has tied a team record for longest home losing streak at four games. The record was first set July 29-Aug. 1, 2008.
Winnipeg gave up 58 hits in the four-game series, which is three less than the franchise record.
Justin Justice's three-run home run in the sixth inning was Winnipeg's first in four games.
Luis Alen extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the second inning.
Pitcher Chris Salamida came into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Vince Harrison was hurt after he was hit by a pitch. It's the first time this season a pitcher has been a base runner for Winnipeg.
Goldeyes starter Ace Walker went five innings. It's his shortest start of the season in 11 outings.
