Fielders Finish First Half with Win Over RiverHawks

ZION, IL-The Lake County Fielders (18-27) finished off the first half of the season with a 6-2 win over the Rockford RiverHawks (20-27) on Lindenhurst Health and Fitness Family Day in front of 3,105 Fielders' fans at Fielders' Stadium in Zion.

The Fielders started the scoring in the third inning when Kevin Haas led off with a double, Brandon Anderson sacrificed him over to third. After an Amos Ramon ground out, Josh Short reached on a throwing error by the Rockford short stop Jono Brooks, which allowed Haas to score and the Fielders were in business.

The RiverHawks did score one in the fifth on an RBI ground out from left fielder Kevin House. But, the Fielders answered on a long home run to left field by left fielder Short, which also scored Ramon. The home run was Short's thirteenth of the season, which is third best in the Northern League.

Rockford scored one in the seventh on a home run from Jason James to get within one, but the Fielders put the game away with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Jeff Dunbar and Aaron Cone led off with back-to-back doubles. Cone later scored on a sacrifice fly from Haas and Kyle Higgins, who had reached on an infield single, scored on an Anderson single to right field.

Garry Bakker (3-4) pitched well to earn get the win. He went six innings, allowing one unearned run and only two hits. He struck out ten and walked six.

The Fielders won two of three from Rockford to finish the first half of the season. Lake County now has three days off for the All-Star break, before returning to action in Rockford on Thursday at 7:05 pm

Short and Ramon will be representing the Fielders on the Northern League All-Star team when they take on the Golden League All-Star team in Tuscon, AZ on Wednesday. Short will also participate in the Home Run Derby contest on Monday.
