Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 5-3 on Sunday afternoon and took three of four games in a weekend series against the Flyers at Newman Outdoor Field.
For the second day in a row, a home run by Fargo-Moorhead (29-17) center fielder Nic Jackson was the big blow that carried the RedHawks. With the game tied in the seventh inning, Jackson came to the plate with Mike Coles and Zach Penprase on base. He turned on an offering from Schaumburg reliever Brian McCullough (2-2) and drove it over the wall in right field to give the RedHawks a 5-2 lead.
Schaumburg (19-31) got an outstanding effort from starting pitcher Alain Quijano. Quijano gave up two runs and limited the RedHawks to four hits in six innings of work while striking out four. However, he also allowed five walks.
Fargo-Moorhead starter T.J. Stanton went 5.2 innings, scattering seven hits and giving up two runs. He struck out three and walked two.
RedHawks All-Star reliever Casey Hoorelbeke (6-2) made his league-leading 26th appearance of the season and picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
With the Flyers having already scored one run in the ninth inning against Donnie Smith, Fargo-Moorhead southpaw Cory Patton came in to slam the door with the tying runner in scoring position to collect his third save of the season.
Jackson was 2-for-2 and also added a sacrifice fly, giving him four RBI on the day. Mike Coles also had two hits for the RedHawks.
First baseman Joe Nowicki was 3-for-4 for Schaumburg and hit his fourth home run of the season. Ray Bourquin, Joey Gomes and Josh Burress all had a pair of hits for the Flyers.
The RedHawks will begin a ten-game home stand against Winnipeg after the Northern League All-Stars take on the Golden League All-Stars in Tucson. Schaumburg returns home to take on Gary after the break.
