JackHammers Win Seventh Straight; Thump Goldeyes 13-6

WINNIPEG, MB, Canada - Jonathan Wyatt launched a grand slam in the eighth to break a 6-6 tie as the Joliet JackHammers (26-22) end the first half with a seven game winning streak, thumping the Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-25) 13-6 Sunday afternoon at Canwest Park. Joliet completed the four game sweep and collected season high in runs (13) and hits (19).

The JackHammers entered the eighth in a 6-6 tie after Winnipeg erased a 6-1 deficit. Ryan Wehrle and Roberto Mena started the frame with consecutive singles and Joe Billick walked to load the bases with no one out. Chad Benefield came on for Anthony Bello and Wyatt sent the 0-1 pitch deep over the wall in right field to put the JackHammers out in front 10-6.

The Goldeyes battled back with four in the six and one in the seventh to tie the game at six. Rory Shortell surrendered a leadoff double to Price Kendall it the sixth, walked Wes Long and Kevin West doubled to make it 6-2. Michael Rocco came on and Justin Justice slammed a three run home run to right to cut the lead to 6-5.

Joliet jumped out with four in the first off Ace Walker and threatened to blow the game wide open. Brad Correll drove home the first run with a double and Freddie Thon lifted a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Chris Colton and Wehrle each knocked in a run with a double for complete the four run first.

The JackHammers added two more before Walker would depart after five innings. Correll and Jon Nelson clubbed back-to-back long balls in the fifth with two outs for a 6-1 lead.

Shortell and Walker each went five innings and did not factor in the decisions with Shortell allowing four runs on seven hits. Walker surrendered the two homers and was charged with six runs on nine hits.

Ross Stout (4-5) picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing two frames allowing four hits and one run.

Eight JackHammers racked up a hit with six of the eight collecting at least two. Wehrle had a game high four hits as Correll, Nelson and Mena each finished with three. Wyatt drove four on the grand slam with Correll picking up three runs batted in.

The JackHammers finished the regular season 9-6 against Winnipeg, including a 6-2 mark at Canwest Park. Joliet will put their seven game winning streak on hold for four days before taking the field Friday, July 16th in Kansas City. First pitch against the T-Bones is slated for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel - The JackHammers finished the first half at 26-22, four games over .500 for the first time this season - The 26 victories is also the most by a JackHammer team prior to the All-Star break - Jonathan Wyatt's grand slam was the first by a JackHammer this season and was also his third four RBI game - Joliet is firmly in third place at the break, two games ahead of Winnipeg in fourth
