Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Brandon Bingel on Friday.
Bingel made 17 relief appearances for the Short Season-A New York-Penn League's West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates' organization) last year, posting an 0-2 record with a 4.88 ERA over 24.0 innings pitched. The Peabody, Massachusetts native walked seven, struck out 15, and held right-handed hitters to a .234 average. Bingel pitched more than 1.0 inning in seven of his 17 outings, including a season-high 3.0 innings of work on August 29th versus State College.
Bingel played three seasons of college baseball at Bryant University (Smithfield, Rhode Island) where he served as a two-way player for the Bulldogs from 2014-16. The 23-year-old Bingel was a combined 15-8 with one save and a 3.84 ERA on the mound at Bryant, while hitting .287 with 16 home runs and 89 RBI in 151 collegiate games as a position player. The Pirates drafted Bingel in the 22nd round in 2016, and the 5-foot-10, 185-pound righty made his professional debut later that summer, posting a 2.91 ERA for the Black Bears. In two seasons of professional baseball, Bingel has held right-handed hitters to a .213 average (89 at bats).
In a separate transaction, left-handed pitcher Zack Dodson has signed with the Mexican League's Sultanes de Monterrey. Dodson was 5-7 with a 5.14 ERA and 98 strikeouts for the Goldeyes last year, and had re-signed with Winnipeg on February 23rd.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes have 28 players signed to a contract for the 2018 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 5th.
