Goldeyes Add Record-Setting Rookie Catcher

April 10, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of rookie catcher Jordan Guida.

Guida, 24, signed with the Detroit Tigers last summer after a record-setting senior season in the NAIA with Tennessee Wesleyan College. In five games with the Tigers' rookie team in the Gulf Coast League, he hit .467 and also appeared in one game at each of Single-A West Michigan of the Midwest League and Advanced-A Lakeland of the Florida State League.

"He's a good young player and very athletic," Forney said. "Obviously you need two catchers and we were looking for a rookie to fill this spot. He can play in the outfield and he runs well. There's more than one way we can use him."

At Tennessee Wesleyan, Guida led the Bulldogs to the NAIA World Series title by hitting an NAIA-record seven home runs in the tournament, including three dingers and six RBI in the semifinal game against LSU-Shreveport. He hit .440 in Tennessee Wesleyan's six games and had 13 RBI. On the season, the product of Glendale, Ariz. hit .330 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI.

The Goldeyes now have 25 players signed for the 2013 season, including 14 pitchers and 11 position players. American Association teams open training camp on May 4 and, under league rules, can have 28 players on their roster during training camp.

Season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2013 season are available by calling the Goldeyes office at 204-982-2273.
