Gold Goes Deep Three Times, Sky Sox Hit Two Three-Run Home Runs In Ninth To Win 12-9

Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Nate Gold went deep three times Monday night at Security Service Field, but three-run homers from Kenny Perez and Adam Melhuse in the ninth inning launched Colorado Springs to a 12-9 come-from-behind victory against Oklahoma.
Kiko Calero (2-2) took the loss after blowing his third save of the season. He came into a 9-6 ballgame and quickly retired Sean Barker before issuing a walk to Doug Bernier and allowing a bunt single to Mike McCoy. That set the stage for Kenny Perez's first home run of the season, a game-tying blast to right-center field.
Christian Colonel (3-for-4, 3 runs) followed with a single up the middle off Calero's glove. The utility player stole second base moments later, prompting the RedHawks to intentionally walk Joe Koshansky with first base open. Adam Melhuse then sent the 2,615 fans home happy with a game-ending homer to right-center field.
The RedHawks took the lead in the second inning when Gold took Jason Hirsh deep, a two-run shot that gave Oklahoma a 2-1 lead. The first baseman was just getting started on the night as he'd later become the eighth player to hit three home runs in a single game against the Sky Sox. His other home runs, both solo shots, came in the third inning and the seventh inning.
Hirsh finished the game after pitching seven innings. He allowed 11 hits and eight runs.
Mark Redman(6-2) notched the win in relief after pitching the final two frames and giving up a run.
Elizardo Ramirez pitched seven innings for the RedHawks, allowing six runs - four earned - on nine hits.
The two unearned runs came on an unusual play in the sixth inning when Adam Melhuse hit a chopper to third baseman Travis Metcalf. Metcalf initially looked off Christian Colonel at second base, but then threw toward the bag and got Colonel into a run down. Colonel stayed in the run down long enough to allow Melhuse to advance to second base, but Gold's throw to third base ricocheted off Colonel's helmet and landed in the stands, allowing both runners to score.
The Sky Sox and RedHawks close their four game series Tuesday with a 7:05 MDT start time. Sean Smith (4-3, 5.80) will try to give his team a series split while Oklahoma will throw Brian Gordon (3-2, 3.55).
