Published on July 28, 2008 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Pacific Coast League today announced Iowa Cubs catcher Koyie Hill as the PCL Hitter of the Week for the week of July 21st-27th. Memphis Redbirds pitcher John Wasdin has been named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for July 21st-27th.

Hill hit safely in all five games he appeared in for the week starting with a 4-for-5 performance against Tucson on July 22nd and ending with a 2-for-4 performance with a solo home run against Las Vegas on July 27th. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native is currently riding a ten-game hitting streak and is hitting .294 with twelve home runs and 47 RBI on the season. Hill is the fourth I-Cubs player to be named PCL hitter or pitcher of the month for the 2008 season.

One of three pitchers to toss a perfect game in the history of the Pacific Coast League, Wasdin nearly threw another on July 21st in Oklahoma. The Ft. Belvoir, Virginia native took a perfect game into the eighth inning before he allowed a solo home run that ended his bid at making history. He finished the day tossing seven innings, allowing one run on two hits with eleven strikeouts to earn his seventh victory of the season. Wasdin followed that strong performance with another solid outing against Tacoma on July 26th tossing six shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out eight batters. The former first round draft pick (25th overall) of the Oakland A's in the 1993 draft is currently 7-and-6 with a 3.96 ERA with three saves on the season.
