Gober Goes Eight to Lead Vipers to Victory

Pitching a season long eight innings Dusty Gober led the Calgary Vipers to a 8-4 victory over the St. George RoadRunners at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Gober (8-1) threw only 94 pitches in his eight frames allowing three runs on six hits while walking two for the win. Calgary scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held the lead throughout the game. With the victory the Vipers swept the four-game series and improved to 21-7 on the second half standings and 44-27 overall. Calgary now leads the Golden Baseball League's North Division by six games with 17 games remaining.

Brent Metheny led the Snakes at the plate with three hits, two steals, two runs, and two runs batted in.

Calgary opened up the scoring in the first inning as Jonny Kaplan walked, Metheny singled, Julio Ramirez knocked in a run with a base hit, and Drew Miller clubbed a three-run shot for his 16th home run of the season and a 4-0 advantage.

St. George responded in the fourth frame when Cody McMorris singled, Tim Rotola walked, Matt Huggins singled in a run, Rotola scored on a wild pitch, and Keenan Long collected a run batted in base hit for a 4-3 game.

The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Miller walked, Luis Taveras singled, and with Miller on third base Gober executed a perfect bunt on a suicide squeeze for a RBI and a 5-3 lead.

Calgary regained their four-run lead in the seventh when Guillermo Reyes singled, Metheny doubled for a RBI, and Metheny scored after a stolen base and a throwing error for a 7-3 advantage.

Another run was added in the eighth frame by the Snakes as Reyes singled and Metheny doubled him home again for a 8-3 score.

The RoadRunners closed out the scoring the ninth when Mike Castellano and Long singled followed by a Chris Brown RBI groundout for a 8-4 final.

The Vipers now hit the road for a series in Edmonton against the Capitals starting on Thursday August 19th at 7:00 PM MDT. The two teams will also play Friday August 20th and Saturday August 21st at 7:00 PM MDT, Sunday August 22nd at 2:00 PM MDT, and Monday August 23rd at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Snakes return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 26th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals for Chick Wagon Night, Friday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT for Small Town Spirit Night, Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night, and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
