Toros Rally Late To Take Final Game From Caps

Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals scored all four of their runs in the first inning on Tuesday, and it wasn't quite enough to get past the Tucson Toros, who rallied for two runs in the eighth to edge the home team 5-4.
Second baseman Matt Rogelstad provided most of the offence for the Caps in their explosive first inning with a bases loaded triple for three RBI, and catcher Mike Rose drove in the other Edmonton run.
The Toros scored single runs in the second, third and fifth before their big inning in the eighth, when short stop Ryan Priddy drove in the tying run with a double and second baseman Jose Valdez knocked in the eventual winner with a sacrifice fly. Despite striking out eight Toros on the night, Caps starter Lou Pote took the loss thanks to the late Tucson rally.
The Caps (13-15) open up a crucial six-game series with the Calgary Vipers at TELUS Field on Thursday. The Vipers are currently in first place in the GBL's North Division at 21-7 with only two and a half weeks to go in the regular season. The Chico Outlaws won the first half, so unless Chico (14-13) repeats in the second half, the Caps must finish in first if they want to qualify for the post-season, and that means beating out the Vipers.
"We need every win we can get," Caps Field Manager Gord Gerlach said of the upcoming series. "We have six games against them, but we could sure use seven or eight. I don't want us to start pressing, though. We still have to play this game relaxed and loose. We're going to take advantage of our off-day and get ourselves ready to play Calgary."
The provincial rivals have six important games scheduled between Thursday and Monday, all of which start at 7 p.m., with the exception of Sunday's double-header starting at 2 p.m. The first half of the double-header is a makeup game from when the teams were rained out in Calgary on July 26.
The series opener on Thursday is another edition of 4 for $44 Thursdays, as fans can purchase four tickets to the game, four hot dogs and four Pepsi products for $44. And it's also Back To School Night at TELUS Field, as the first 500 kids through the gates receive a special Capitals lunch bag.
