Caps Power Their Way To Win Over Toros

August 17, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Monday night's Golden Baseball League game between the Edmonton Capitals and Tucson Toros was both wet and wild, but the home team prevailed when all was said and done with a 9-6 victory.

The game at TELUS Field was delayed by one hour after a rain storm rolled through the area, but once the action got going around 8 p.m., it was fast and fierce, with the Caps putting up three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings en route to the win.

Both third baseman Alex Prieto and right fielder Tom Collaro crushed home runs during the rallies, and Prieto finished the game going 2-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored. Collaro, first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh, short stop Enrique Cruz and centre fielder Ryan Stevenson also had multi-hit performances to contribute to the win.

Evan White got the start on the mound for the Caps and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up just three runs on four hits and striking out three. Ryan Paul, Berek Fasking and Jesse Oster covered the sixth and seventh innings in relief, and Sherwood Park native Mike Johnson tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts after being signed by the Caps on Sunday. Chad Blackwell replaced him in the ninth and gave up one run before finishing it off.

"It feels good to be back," the former Major Leaguer Johnson said of his 2010 debut with the Caps. "We've got a bunch of guys in the lineup who can really swing it, some good arms in the bullpen and some quality starters. We've got a real good ball club here and I hope I can do my part to help us get into the playoffs."

The four-game series against the Toros concludes on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the Caps get Wednesday off before starting a crucial six-game series at home against the provincial rival Calgary Vipers starting on Thursday. Edmonton (13-14) is chasing Calgary (20-7) for first place in the GBL's North Division in the second half.

Monday's game was another edition of Carpool Mondays down at TELUS Field, as any fans who had four or more people in their vehicles were allowed to park for free. And when the Tucson series concludes on Tuesday, all-you-can-drink slushies will be $2 all night as part of Family Vision Care $2 Tuesdays.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
