Victoria Seals News Release

The Victoria Seals continued a four-game set with the Chico Outlaws in a Monday evening contest at Royal Athletic Park. Victoria sent Isaac Hess (3-3) to the mound, while Chico countered with Reed Dickert (4-4) in game three.

Victoria opened the scoring early when Tim Rodriguez hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the first. Singles from Wilver Perez and Henry Calderon, followed by a fielder's choice off the bat of Terrence McClain set up the 2-0 advantage.

Pulling within one in the fourth frame, Chico got on the board when J.J Sherrill reached on an error, followed by an RBI double down the left field line by Santo DeLeon. Throwing heat out of the gate was Hess, who went on to post a franchise record 13 strikeouts on the evening. On the back of their starter, Victoria extended their lead using a two-run home run from first baseman Josh Arhart, for a 4-1 advantage in the sixth frame.

The Outlaws' came alive in the eighth inning, though, scoring three runs to even the game at 4-4. After a single and a walk, Blake Gailen hit into a fielder's choice, with two runs scoring when Hess committed an error while trying to get the force out at third. With two outs and Gailen at third, Mitch Einertson hit an RBI single to centrefield to round out the scoring in the top half of the frame.

Taking their first lead of the game in the ninth, Chico started with a single from Pascual Del Real, followed by a RBI triple from John Urick off of Victoria reliever Brandon Villafuerte. Blake Gailen then hit a two-out RBI double against relief pitcher Joe Sergent for the 6-4 lead.

A wild bottom half of the ninth saw the game end in dramatic fashion. Josh Arhart began the inning with a lead-off single, then appeared to be thrown out while leading off of second, however a controversial call by the second base umpire ruled Arhart safe.

A walk to Colin Moro, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Matt Kavanaugh brought pinch-hitter Anthony Pluta to the plate. Pluta then brought the crowd to their feet with a two-run triple off of pitcher Matt Perisho, that went over the head of Gailen in centrefield to tie the score at 6-6.

After an intentional walk to Perez, Calderon attempted a suicide squeeze, with Pluta being tagged out in a run-down between third and home. However the play was called back when the home plate umpire declared that Calderon was hit by the pitch when attempting the bunt. With the bases now loaded and only one out, McClain drove the ball down the third baseline with the ball bouncing out of the glove of DeLeon for the game-ending error. Pluta would score from third to give the Seals a 5-4 walk-off victory for the second game in a row.

Aaron Easton picked up his fourth win of the campaign allowing one hit in 1/3 innings of work, while Victoria starter Isaac Hess drew a no decision despite a brilliant performance in game three. Matt Perisho registered the loss allowing three runs on two hits in 1/3 innings of play. Josh Arhart led the Seals' offence going 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI's. Bobby Hill drove in two runs on one hit in a losing cause for Outlaws.
