Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that over $29,000 was raised in this year's Westman Dreams for Kids Goals for Kids Campaign.
This past season, the Wheat Kings scored 258 goals, third highest in the WHL, helping to generate over $10,000 for the Foundation, which was formed in 1991 to help make dreams come true for western Manitoba children from life threatening diseases.
"Goals for Kids" was established the folloiwng year and has raised approximately $230,000 since that time.
The $29,600 totals include the generous support of Paterson Grain as well as $18,000 that was raised during the annual Marty Murray golf tournament last summer in Melita. A former captain of the WHL's Wheat Kings, Murray has been heavily involved with "Goals for Kids" since his playing days in Brandon during the early nineties.
As in past years, several local businesses served as corporate sponsors this past year. Each time, the Wheat Kings scored a goal or Brandon recorded a shutout, these sponsors would donate at least $25 to the Foundation.
The Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation is a non-profit, local registered organization dedicated to granting dreams to seriously ill children throughout western Manitoba.
In addition to Paterson Grain, the local partners included RCB Truck and Trailer Repair, Total Eye Care, Sandra Boychuk of Century 21, Dean Boychuk of Peterbilt, Lennon Trilogy, Paterson, Patterson, Wyman and Abel, Montana's Cookhouse, Roy Johnston & Co., Trevor Kindrat of Advance Auto Body, Action Power, Ken Campbell, Chris Zorzos and Scott Ball of Precision Toyota, Morningstar Metals, J & G Supply, Forbidden Flavours, Brandon Source for Sports, C & C Rentals, Emco Waterworks, Brandon Business Interiors, KK Penner & Sons, Wheat City Roofing, Northside Mazda, Summit Promotions, BDO Dunwoody, Jason Kreiser of the Keystone Centre, Al Rosendaal of Investors Group, Parthenon Pizza, Obermaier's Sausage and Meat, Shoppers Drug Mart, Kuiper's Family Bakery, Wilkinson Construction, Overland Waste and Recycling, Dr. Brian Kiliwnik.
Local product Mark Derlago's team leading 46 goals generated over $1,100 for "Goals for Kids".
In on-ice news, the Wheat Kings practiced Monday at the Canada Games Sportsplex and will again on Tuesday morning, before travelling to Prince Albert for games three, four and five (if necessary) this Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
Brandon currently leads the best of seven opening round playoff series with the Raiders after back to back overtime victories at the Keystone Centre this past weekend. Derlago was one of three Wheat Kings to score twice in the two weekend wins. The others were Andrew Clark and rookie left-winger Daniel Bartek. 19-year old defenceman Dustin Kohn meanwhile added three assists for the Wheat Kings, who outshot Prince Albert 90-40 through the first two games of the series.
The Brandon - Prince Albert series is a 2-3-2 playoff format due to the fact that the Keystone Centre is hosting the 100th annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair this week.
