Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Sudbury Wolves escaped with a shootout victory after being outshot 45-24.

The goaltenders were the story early on as both Mark Visentin and Johan Mattsson blanked the opposition, keeping the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.

The Wolves were the first team to break the tie, as Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Josh Leivo slipped one past Visentin just over four minutes into the second. The IceDogs would respond on a goal by Freddie Hamilton, his team leading tenth of the season. Ryan Strome and David Pacan would draw assists on the scoring play.

Niagara carried the play in the third period, outshooting Sudbury 15-4, but were unable to beat Swedish netminder Mattsson. With both goalies playing spectacular, the game would head to overtime tied at one. The shots at the end of three periods were 41-21 in favour of Niagara.

Both teams traded chances in the overtime period, but again, neither team was able to solve the goaltenders, sending the game to a shootout.

Alex Friesen was the only IceDog to convert on his shootout attempt, while the Wolves were able to put two past Visentin, sealing the 2-1 win.
