Oshawa Generals News Release
Special teams and a disallowed goal provided the storyline in Owen Sound Saturday night: the Generals fell 6-2 to the Attack before 2,439 fans at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
The first period played out like an intense chess match with both teams fighting to find open ice. Dan Altshuller made back to back starts for the Generals and was tested at the 14 minute mark by a breaking Gemel Smith who went backhand but couldn't beat the Oshawa goaltender. Altshuller had a strong opening frame making 13 stops in a period where the Generals were outshot 15-4.
The large shot discrepancy was mainly due to penalty trouble. The Generals faced two 5-on-3's and the end result was an Owen Sound power play goal at 12:36: Artur Gavrus blasted a slap shot from the point into the top right corner of the net.
Late in the first, Oshawa got caught pressing on a power play of their own. Brace Cameron made the Generals pay when he got in behind the defence and powered a wrister over Altshuller's left shoulder with only seconds left on the clock. At the end of 1, the Attack led 2-0, but give credit to Altshuller: the damage could have been much worse.
Zamboni problems caused a major delay between the first and second periods. When action finally resumed, the Generals were a much improved team. JP Labardo got Oshawa on the board ripping a power play marker over Attack goaltender, Jordan Binnington's shoulder 4 minutes into the frame. Unfortunately for Oshawa, momentum shifted on one call: Andy Andreoff appeared to tie the game at 2, but instead, the goal was waved off and Nicklas Jensen was called for holding. The Attack took advantage of the ensuing 5-on-3 scoring 2 goals in a 19 second span. Owen Sound was out in front 4-1.
True to their character, the Generals refused to pack it in, and Emerson Clark took advantage of a defensive turnover late in the period. Clark fed Cole Cassels in tight who jammed the puck past Binnington bringing the Gens back within striking distance. Oshawa was down 4-2 heading into the third.
Scott Sabourin came close to bringing Oshawa to within 1 early on in the third. He broke in on goal short handed, but Binnington made his best save of the evening doing the splits and snagging Sabourin's low, hard shot right out of the air. After that, the Attack's power play padded the lead and the final score read 6-2.
Oshawa's next home game is tomorrow, Sunday October 30th, vs. Mississauga at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 6:05 PM. Don't forget, it's the Halloween game so come wearing a costume for a chance to win a great prize.
