Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans flashed their leather in the field as the defense carried the Birds to victory 8-3 over the Columbia Fireflies on Wednesday night. The win puts the Pelicans back at .500 with a 49-49 record, as the Fireflies drop to 45-53. Wednesday's victory marked the 10th straight win for Myrtle Beach over Columbia.
Fans at Pelicans Ballpark were treated to two incredible plays by shortstop Kevin Made (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) including a spinning throw and a diving catch. Jordan Nwogu (0-5, R) also robbed a home run in left field by stretching his glove over the wall on a ball hit by Enrique Valdez.
On the hitting side, Made continued his dominant run with his ninth multi-hit game in the month of August. He plated two runs on a double in the eighth inning to break the game open. Jacob Wetzel (2-4, 3B, 3 RBI) collected three more RBIs to make his total five in the first two games of the series with a single in the first and a two-run triple in the eighth. Owen Caissie (1-3, RBI, 2 R) posted his first hit with Myrtle Beach with an RBI single in the first.
The win went to Carlos Ocampo (4-0) after tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief but was taken out of the game unexpectedly with an apparent arm injury. Tyler Schlaffer started the game and lasted four innings with two earned runs off four hits, striking out two and walking two.
The Fireflies collected 10 hits but scored just three runs as they left nine on base and hit 3-14 with runners in scoring position. Darryl Collins (2-4, RBI) led the team with two hits and a run batted in. Burle Dixon (1-4, RBI) also collected an RBI in the loss.
Anderson Paulino (6-6) took the loss after allowing four runs in the first inning, three of which were earned. He would go on to pitch four innings with four hits allowed, striking out four and walking two. Wander Arias came out of the bullpen and gave up four more runs off five hits in his 3 2/3 innings.
The visitors started with an early lead as Columbia plated one in the opening frame. Diego Hernandez led off the game with a walk on Schlaffer and went on to steal second and third base in the next two at-bats. Collins came up with one out and cracked a single up the middle to score Diego Hernandez and put the Fireflies up 1-0.
It was a quick response from Myrtle Beach as four runs came across in the bottom half. Christian Franklin led off with a walk and moved to second on a groundout by Made. Nwogu followed by reaching first on a wild throw by third baseman Jose Marquez as Franklin moved to third. Caissie lined a single to right with runners on the corners that scored Franklin and tied the game. Nwogu came in on a single by Wetzel to give Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead. After Jonathan Sierra flew out for the second out, Casey Opitz drew a walk to load the bases. Ed Howard came up and hit an infield single to Valdez at short as Caissie scored. Another run came in as Valdez's throw to first went wide and the Pelicans went up 4-1 after the opening frame.
Columbia would get one back in the top of the third as Tyler Tolbert hit a pop-up to right field that neither Howard nor Wetzel could catch as Tolbert stretched it out into a double. Dixon lined a single to right with two outs and runners on first and second that scored Tolbert and made it a 4-2 Pelicans lead.
Made flashed the leather with his diving catch in the top of the seventh as Columbia put runners on first and second with one out. Collins lined a ball to Made's right as he laid out and made the catch for the second out of the inning. Juan Carlos Negret would follow with a single to left field but Nwogu's throw home would get to Opitz in time to tag out Diego Hernandez for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom half, Made hit an infield single to short with one out. After Nwogu was retired, Caissie drew a walk to put two runners on. The bases cleared after Wetzel charged a shot to center field for a triple and the Birds went up 6-2.
In the top of the eighth, Valdez flew a ball to deep left field, but Nwogu made one of the most impressive catches of the year by leaping over the wall and robbing a home run.
Myrtle beach tacked on two more runs in the bottom half as Howard doubled with one out. After Pertuz lined out, Franklin drew his second walk of the game. Made knocked both runners in with a double down the left-field line for his second hit of the game.
The Fireflies added one more run in the ninth as Omar Hernandez doubled to left to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch by Pelicans' reliever Riley Martin to make it 8-3.
The Pelicans and Fireflies will meet for game three of the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
